I get asked a bit what "POV" is or how I made a certain piece (and POV is usually the answer). So I thought it might be neat to make a tutorial-type presentation that answers the question What is POV-Ray?.
I think it's a wonderful prog but I'm aware that it's not everyone's cup o' tea. Designing three dimensional scenes entirely in your imagination and then describing them in numbers can be a daunting prospect but I think - if you have a look at this one and it doesn't immediately make you run off screaming then maybe you might want to give POV a try. It's possible I might make some "how to use POV-Ray" tutorials after this - depends on demand. Examples: These gloopy tentacles were made with POV. This explosive little emote-style animation was done entirely in POV POV can even make fractal art! |

It's wonderful you made a tutorial for this!

As the sky flows by with descending wings,
I feel as though time just takes me away,
leaving tears that will never dry.
We all must fall into the dreams of reality,
and awaken from the reality of dreams.
Hehe. So hopefully the little tutorial explains it better than I normally do. It's like legos inside your head

All the art kids are like "What? You can't make art with..with numbers! Computers can't be artistic! I can draw more realistically than that!"
To which I have responded:
"Try caustics and refraction on your little paper. Try drawing a mathematically perfect sphere without tracing it. Try drawing a fractal. Just try."

TEH SILLEH IZ THIS!
I often use POV as a kinda sketch tool when starting on non-raytraced projects too. A quick and dirty model in POV can help me think about viewer position, lighting and perspective in ways I find difficult to do with a pencil and a blank sheet of paper.
As for realism (which clearly is not really my field of expertise

That's actually a good idea, now that you mention it.
Yeah, I once spent nearly 20 minutes explaining handedness to a Calculus student. :/ Go figure.
Also, did you hear? They restarted the IRTC! This month's topic is steampunk. I'm psyched.
